Gyles Iannone

Archaeologist

Gyles Iannone is currently an Associate Professor in the Anthropology Department at Trent University. His degrees were earned at Simon Fraser University (B.A.), Trent University (M.A.), and the University of London (Ph.D.). An anthropological archaeologist, Professor Iannone's main areas of interest include: Archaeology, Socio-environmental Dynamics (global change, sustainability, collapse, and regeneration), Early Civilizations, Inequality, Mesoamerica (esp. Maya), and Archaeology and Popular Culture. He has been conducting archaeological field research for 22 years, the past 19 in Belize, Central America. He has recently held two consecutive Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council grants for his examination of the rise and fall of an ancient Maya city-state called “Minanha” – “the place without water.” Professor Iannone is the Director of the University’s long-standing archaeological field school in Belize. He has served as the Acting Associate Vice-President of Research (2008-2009), the Director of the Anthropology Graduate Program (2003-2008), and the Associate Undergraduate Chair in the Anthropology Department (2006-2008).
