Institute of Archaeology

Dr. Jaime Awe is presently Director of the Institute of Archaeology in the National Institute of Culture and History.  A graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Cayo, and St. John’s Junior College in Belize City, he was awarded a Bachelor’s Degree with Honours, and a Masters Degree in Anthropology at Trent University in Ontario, Canada.  He later completed a Ph.D. in Archaeology in 1992 at the Institute of Archaeology, University of London, England.  Between 1990 and 1996 he was a professor of Archaeology at Trent University in Canada, then moved to the University of New Hampshire, U.S.A. from 1996 to 2000.  Since returning to Belize in 2000, Dr. Awe has coordinated major conservation projects at Cahal Pech, Xunantunich, Caracol, Altun Ha, Cerros and Lamanai, he continues to conduct research at Cahal Pech, Baking Pot and several cave sites in the Cayo District, and he teaches in the Anthropology program at Galen University.  During his active career in archaeology, Dr. Awe has published numerous articles in various books, archaeological journals, and magazines, and his research has been featured in several national and international television documentaries.
